Detoxing Your Home
Lesson 8
If you're going to go through the process of detoxing for your internal health, why not also take some time to detox your home?
Twice a year, it's always a good idea to deep clean your home. This will allow you to breathe new life into your space and give you a clean slate for you to start your detox with. Here are a few places to focus on:
Kitchen
Focus on these over-looked appliances and give them a good cleaning (unplug everything before doing this!):
Coffee Maker: Since you will be retiring this bad boy for the next month, you might as well give it a good cleaning! Take it all apart and give it a good scrub. Change the water filter if it has one, and let it all dry out before putting it back together.
Toaster: If you already are in the habit of pulling the little bottom tray out, then great! If you haven't pull it out, over the sink, and give it a good shake. Flip the toaster upside down over the sink too and give it a good shake.
Your Sink: Sinks can become the dirtiest part of your kitchen if you're not careful. Grime builds up quickly, so use some hot soapy water and a scrubber and clean the sink, including the catchall in the drain.
Microwave: Same goes for the microwave - it easily builds up with grime and gunk.
Fridge: Take everything out of the fridge and clean the shelves with an anti-bacterial cleaner or pure vinegar. Check expiration dates on condiments and other foods and discard anything questionable or anything that doesn't fit into this new healthy you lifestyle anymore. I also recommend investing in fridge bins to store everything in. A visually pleasing fridge will make everyone in your house happy, even if you threw the can of whipped cream away that your spouse loved so much 😉
Cabinets: Just like the fridge, take everything out and give it a good cleaning. Check dates on goods in your pantry and organize everything - cans in one section, cereals and flours in another, etc. Oxo sells great airtight clear storage containers for dry goods, which also makes for a visually appealing kitchen!
Take a look at your cleaning products:
Many have harmful chemicals, are packaged in one time use plastic containers, and are simply just bad for the environment. If I can urge you to do just one thing in this whole detox, it would be to find sustainable and/or organic cleaning products. Companies like Method, Mrs. Meyers, Caldera, Seventh Generation and Green Works make organic, eco-friendly products, some of which come in recyclable packaging. You could go crazy with trying to be 100% earth-friendly, but even just this one simple step will not only help the environment but significantly improve the health of your home, because you are eliminating harmful chemicals both on your household surfaces and in the air.
Home
Use a soft cleaning cloth to wipe down your laptop and phones and use a sanitizing spray on door knobs and bathroom counters.
If you haven't washed your windows in a while, give them a good cleaning with a glass cleaner, then open the windows and let some fresh air come through the house.
Wash all your bedding, including your comforter and mattress cover. If you're able to let them dry outside, do so!
This section is all about breathing new life into your home, so hopefully you get the picture on what to focus on, so go start and be amazed how much cleaner you feel walking through your home.
