How to Make Perfect Guacamole
Lesson 3
Guacamole is a great snack or compliment to sandwiches, salads, tacos and more. It's full of essential healthy fats too.
When choosing the right avocado, things can get a little tricky. Find one that has a dark green hue to it- the darker the hue the riper it is. Also make sure it is just soft enough for you to sink your fingers into, but not mushy, and you should see a hint of green when you pluck off the remaining stem at the top.
If the skin has turned black or started to dry out, throw it out. If the skin is a yellowish-green, wait another day to use them. If you bought several avocados and they all turn ripe at the same time, storing them in the crisper in the fridge will buy you another day or two before they go bad.
To make the guacamole, you will need the following:
1 mixing bowl
1 small cutting board
1 good knife
2 ripe avocados
1 4oz can chopped green chiles
1 lime
1 handful cilantro
salt
To start, hold the avocado in your hand and cut into the avocado until the knife hits the seed. Keeping the knife in it's place, rotate the avocado around so that the knife cuts around the entire avocado. Remove the knife, then twist the avocado to separate the two sides. Squeeze the avocado meat into a bowl, and discard the seed and skin.
Using a fork, mash the avocado until it starts to get creamy and mashed.
Next add the can of chiles, the juice of half of the lime, and the cilantro (shred or chop the cilantro before adding it in). Mix well, then add about 1 tsp of salt. Stir, then taste and add more salt and lime juice if desired. If the guac tastes bland, it's almost always salt that it needs.
